Work Submitted: Instrumental guitar album, Viaje del Alma

Label: Real Music House

Who are your influences?: In my album you can feel the influences of gypsy swing, flamenco, classical music.

Describe your nominated work: My album Viaje del Alma is very personal and sensitive. This is what its title arose from as well, which in English means “The Journey of Soul.” While recording the album, it was most important to maintain the feeling of naturalism and spontaneity. The unique sound and musical expression of the album arise from two fundamental guitar courses – flamenco and gypsy jazz, and also from classical music. In addition to being influenced by these musical genres, I spent a lot of the last few years in Spain and Paris. That’s  why my solo guitar album is thematically floating in this spirit.

Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording?: I played bass parts on my Framus guitar and I used also mandolin in one song. But that’s it. Very natural sound without effects.

Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned?: Everything was fine! :-)

How long do you expect it will take to recoup your out-of-pocket recording expenses?: With my debut solo guitar album I didn’t have exaggerated financial expectations. I didn’t produce my album with the primary intention of making money, so I’m glad that the production costs are already back.

Why did you choose to submit this work to The 12th IMAs?: I tried to take at least a few of those possibilities I have as an independent artist to promote my album.

What’s your definition of success and how will you know when you’ve achieved it?: For me, the definition of success is mainly my satisfaction with my own creation.

How will you leverage your IMA honors to achieve your career goals?: I hope that thanks to the success in the IMA, more people could hear my music and know me as a guitarist.

Who’s sitting in your audience and what makes your fans unique?: I don’t know. Perhaps like how my style is unique, also my fans are unique. :-)  I like when people feel good while listening to my songs. I’m trying to express my feelings, the joy as well as sorrow and I hope the audience feels it with me.

What is your guilty pleasure on the road? Any close calls or mishaps while on tour?: I love traveling as well as playing, so I’m enjoying everything.

Who are your musical heroes & influences?: Al DiMeola, John McLaughlin, Steve Morse, Gothrie Govan, Gary Moore, John Lee Hooker, Paco de Lucia, Tommy Emmanuel, Victor Wooten, Flecktones, Bireli Lagrene, Rosenberg Trio, Beatles, Queen, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Extreme, Whitesnake, Kiss, Toto, John Farnham, Freddie Mercury, Michal Jackson, Tina Turner, Lara Fabian, John Cowan, Michael Kiske, Glenn Hughes, Tom Jones, and many others.

Are there any songs you wish you wrote and why?: I wish just to write songs that I have in my head. And therefore always to have new fresh ideas and inspirations and the ability to express them.

What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans?: Hmm…everyone can be surprised by something!

How do you discover new music? Do you buy music or are you content with streaming?: I’m discovering new music via internet – YouTube, etc.  I like to support other musicians by purchasing their album directly at the concert.

How will musicians make a living if fans continue to expect music to be free?: It’s wrong that everyone receives a salary for their job, but artists are expected to distribute their work for free, and do it to the fullest, with joy and really professional. They will improve in their free time, musical instruments and other equipment will fall from the sky and musicians and other artists will live only from the air and love. It’s stupid. But we still love it. :-)

What don’t fans/audiences understand about the music industry today?: Fans are victims of massive advertising and commercial campaigns. They don’t have to understand, they must buy.

Are digital singles/EPs vs. full albums the future?: Probably…unfortunately, yes. But I still prefer a full album where I can listen to the entire comprehensive musical expression.

Finish this sentence: The music industry is…the Industry. There is nothing about art and feelings. Nowadays it’s mostly about the money, commerce and big nicely packaged shit.

What do you have in the works for the upcoming year?: I am preparing a new solo acoustic guitar album, new electric guitar album, working on the animation project On The Road, concerts, traveling.
