Describe your nominated work: I Dare You is a musical expression which is the result of happy times, sad times, and all the times in between. It’s relatable and listenable and I couldn’t be more proud of it!
Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMA’s? With all the work that the incredible musicians I was lucky enough to work with put it, it’s a project that I am proud of. It’s something that I feel is worthy of recognition because of the passion, not only from myself, but everyone who played on it expressed.
Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording? We stuck with all live sounds this time.
Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned? The whole thing was a happy accident really… We went in unrehearsed and went live off the floor and came up with something I’m really, really happy with.
Who’s sitting in your audience? I’ve come across every sort of person at my shows!! It’s been pretty amazing… For instance, every age range I can think of has made an appearance.
What makes your fans unique? They are who they are.
Are there any songs you wish you wrote? So many!! I think Adele‘s new song “Rolling in the Deep” is incredible though.
What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans? I suppose I currently have Biggie playing…
What is your dream show lineup? I’m a huge advocate for the Vancouver music scene… I would be honored to play a show with Hey Ocean, The Zolas, David Vertesi, Hannah Georgas, Shad, Top Less Gay Love Tekno Party… The list goes on and on!
What is your guilty pleasure on the road? Late nights!
Any close calls or mishaps while on tour? Once upon a time I was setting up my own PA system and realized I’d forgotten the cord bag. That had the cords. TO EVERYTHING. That was pretty gnarly until my bass player swooped in with the appropriate cords that he just randomly kept in his case and the day was saved
Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? I keep it pretty standard…
Should music be free? I believe that’s it’s inevitable that it’s going to be in this day and age. Why fight it? Embrace it!
Are digital singles vs. full albums the future of music? The single is making a comeback (from the 60s)… I believe full albums will always have their audience, but it seems like the mainstream world is going after singles once again.
Finish this sentence: The music industry is… horrible, beautiful, fickle, loyal, extraordinary, and unpredictable. I love it.
