HOMEBASE/COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Lazerland.

GENRES THAT BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC: Disco house, funk, soul, french touch, new romantic, soundtrack pop.

ARTISTS ON THIS RECORDING:  Steven Hawley, Sage Schwarm

WHERE WAS YOUR RELEASE RECORDED? our basement.

DESCRIBE THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR RELEASE: early 80′s italo, french house/disco & Nile Rodgers.

IS IT BIOGRAPHICAL? Naw, it’s linear, hypnotizing, inspirational but playful.

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS RELEASE TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAS? We felt it best encompassed our vibe, vision & aesthetic.

WHAT/ IF ANY UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS, SONG STRUCTURE/WRITING TECHNIQUES, RECORDING METHODS DID YOU USE? A good amount of analog synths from the 70s and 80s, an original Echo Plex & carrot juice.

DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? Indirectly, through previous sales I guess.

DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE: Really diverse…gay, straight, young, old, black, white & yellow. Which makes sense, good music is timelessly cool.

WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? I’ve noticed our core base are just super sweet, genuine people, who aren’t uptight, are positive & aren’t too concerned about trying to be any particular thing.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? US: Portland, Los Angeles & DC. EU: London.

NAME SOME OF YOUR FAVE SONGS & WHY THEY RESONATE: A few of my favorites:

Bladerunner Blues by Vangelis – Just warm, stunning atmosphere on this. A quintessential example of sonic futurism. Like, if Enya was really cool.

I’m Only Shooting Love by Time Bandits – I always love broken English lyrics, they can be so full of the best mistakes. New wave, blue eyed soul, boogie funk. Encompasses some of the best elements of both white & black music.

Give Me Your Love – Sisters Love – A mid 70′s underground disco classic, considered to be one of the genres founding moments. All I know is the vocals and arrangements here just literally drip with raw funk & sexuality. The vocals just cut through, in a raw gospel tone kinda way while a smooth groove keeps in pocket..just incredible.

Break It Down Again by Tears For Fears – This kinda stuff has always affected my writing melodically more than anything. Lyrically, I’m not a brilliant poet like these guys, i’m more primal & feel best using vocal arrangements like an anthem-y lead rhythm instrument or something. This era of new romantic, new wave, modern soul stuff just really touches my heart. It took till i was a bit older to realize, but it’s not so much what you’re saying as much as how you’re saying it & if it’s coming from a genuine place..

Girls On Film (Salt Tank Remix) by Duran Duran – My favorite remixes are when I feel like the remixer has gently re sculpted the original by taking it’s strongest elements & hybrid-ed it with an inviting new, but tasteful dynamic. This Salt Tank remix from 1998 was a largely overlooked, shining example of that. Girls On Film is already a fabulous song, but this remix stays true to the OG vibe while looping the best aspects and turning it into a disco house masterpiece. Sounds like Daft Punk playing as a full live band.

WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Oh i dunno… I don’t really think about things in landmarks…just working with artists we have enormous respect & appreciation for like Kathy Diamond, Marc Gauvin & Juan Maclean. Also, just connecting with fans through our music.

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR THE REST OF 2010? 2011? We have a new album we just completed titled, “The Space Chase” coming out on Disco Demolition Records later this fall 2010. We’ve been hard at work on it for the past 2 years. The first single comes in early fall w/ some legendary & brilliant remixers as well. This release is going to change the landscape of dance music.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… totally up in the air.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Genuine friends, having enough $$ to stay out of office life, helping others, dancing, sunshine & some good lovin.

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Willie Nelson.

NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU CHAMPIONING: The Outrunners (France), Joe Smooth (Chicago), Bottin (Italy), Kathy Diamond (UK), Harvey Scales (Milwaukee), Faze Action (UK).
