DESCRIBE THE STORY BEHIND THIS SONG:
Little Miss Sunshine is about a forbidden crush I had on someone in high school. A light, feel-good, uncomplicated yet, personally forbidden crush. It is about someone who you just WISH would walk through the SAME hallway as you at the SAME TIME as you. My feelings were pure, and innocent and I valued and observed them from a distance- wondering and dreaming what could become of them. The song is about the feeling of wanting to be a part of somebody’s life, somehow; in any way- even if it is just to make them smile or laugh once in a while. The message exudes positivety in any matter; after a while I started singing the chorus, “You should feel good, everyday you should,” for everybody. Sometimes you need a spark to come from something small, like a crush, to remind you of how beautiful the world can be.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs?
I selected Little Miss Sunshine to submit to the Independent Music Awards because it is one of my most appreciated songs. It is a yellow song. When I wrote it I felt amazing, when I sing it I feel amazing, and I believe it can make you feel amazing when you listen to it; especially if you sing along.
WAS THIS ALWAYS INTENDED AS AN ACOUSTIC TUNE OR IS THIS RE-WORKED?
Little Miss Sunshine was always intended to be an acoustic tune. I wrote it on a beautiful blue acoustic guitar, outside in the green grass, sometime in the spring.
WHAT/ IF ANY UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS, SONG STRUCTURE/WRITING TECHNIQUE, RECORDING METHOD DID YOU USE?
It was my first time recording in a studio. Every method was new to me. Before this studio experience, I had been recording the songs I wrote, as I wrote them, onto this huge box mp3 player that only worked when it was plugged in. For the song Little Miss Sunshine, I brought my best friend, and very talented artist, De Boom into the studio to sing back-up vocals, and Greg Dawson, the producer brought in the amazing Billy Curtis to play the banjo.
WHAT’S THE SECRET TO MAKING ACOUSTIC SONGS STAND OUT?
Acoustic songs stand out on their own. They are raw, stripped down versions of music. They are the beginning. The artist and his art. I usually perform on stage alone, as a singer/songwriter, with my guitar and with my voice, singing words that I have written about everything in my life. The acoustic experience is very real, soulful, personal, and vulnerable. I believe it gives the audience the best chance to really connect with the artist.

HAPPINESS. Maintaining the ability to write and express myself through music and art. Having the ability to move people to do good things and to feel good and to sing and to dance and to smile and to love. LOVE. oh yellow. everyday.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS?

Let me tell you something about Courtney… My daughter had just passed away, clearly a devestating time. It was the first time that I heard the artist that my daughter had befriended and bragged about for so long. It was Courtney’s voice and “Little Miss Sunshine”, that gave me and my family some peace in the days that came. No, I didn’t just pop in a CD, I sat beside her as she sang from her heart to the all the other hearts that were aching as Sarah lay before us.
