WHERE WAS YOUR RELEASE RECORDED? My own studio, Spirit Hawk Studios Dayton, OH
DESCRIBE THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR RELEASE: My inspiration is always from Spirit and from the heart.
IS IT BIOGRAPHICAL? No, more universal.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS RELEASE TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAS?
It was (and still is) a very successful CD when it was released. It won the COVR (Coalition of Visionary Resources) Music Award for Best New Age CD and was a nominee for the 11th Annual Native American Music Awards for Best New Age CD and Flutist Of The Year.
WHAT/ IF ANY UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS, SONG STRUCTURE/WRITING TECHNIQUES, RECORDING METHODS DID YOU USE?
The unique instrument used is the Native American flute in a variety of different keys. I also used a wind wand on a couple of songs. I first saw it used in the orchestra in the movie Autumn Rush. It almost sounds like a didgeridoo.
DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? No, I’ve released 13 CDs and never asked fans to help.
DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE:
Older (I’m going on 59) and experienced music listeners. They are people who like the Native American flute and like to use my music for meditation, relaxation, and energy work.
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? They’re not your mainstream music audience.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? National powwows, Metaphysical expos.
NAME SOME OF YOUR FAVE SONGS & WHY THEY RESONATE: Don’t have any. I do have favorite styles of music.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Winning four Native American Music Awards, including Flutist Of The Year.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR THE REST OF 2010? 2011? Just released a Best Of CD.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… in transition. With the ability and ease of recording these days, more and more musicians are releasing their own CDs on their own in dependant label. Digital downloads are the wave of the future. Unfortunately, there’s not as much profit in that media for the musician.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS?
Success comes in many different levels. To me, a successful musician is one that can work steady, has music to offer that sells a lot of CDs both at live performances and with national distribution, and has received the recognition of being one of the best in their field. At a different level, if you’re a musician that can make a living playing music or even supplement your income, then you’re successful.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS?
A lot of New Age music and artists like Enigma and David Arkenstone.
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU CHAMPIONING:
I support good music in the Native American Music Awards and the Grammys. I’m a voting member for both.
HOW CAN FANS FOLLOW YOU? WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE?
My website: www.douglasbluefeather.com, Facebook/douglasbluefeather.com
My music is available on my webiste, CDBaby.com, Amazon.com, all major download sites and is distributed by Four Winds, New Leaf, Music Design, White Swan, and Zango.
