HOMEBASE/COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Roots, Soul

ALBUM NOMINATED TRACK IS ON: The Holy Open Secret

ARTISTS FEATURED: Sean Hoots, Andrew Gray, Robert Berliner

WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? Our records are in most “mom and pop” style music stores around the country (support local business!). Online outlets, too.

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? [I wasn't 100% sure what Sing Out for Social Action meant, but I knew this song pushes people to contemplate the shift to an industrialized society. I believe people have followed industry blindly, and even many of those who think they are getting away from the industrial process (especially in organic foods, etc.) have been duped by the industry into stepping further into their hole. This track speaks to that, and asks people to refuse to be led blindly by the powers that be.] – Clark Conner, Product Manager,Hoots & Hellmouth /MAD Dragon Records

DESCRIBE THE INSPIRATION FOR THIS TRACK: Watching housing developments and their accompanying strip malls sprout up and sprawl across the countryside like so many acrid apple trees: an orchard of organized violence against the pristine entropy of the land and its inhabitants, thrusting greedy roots into the soil, sapping it of its life, character and essence and rendering it fallow foundation for its fruits- the little boxes on the hillside, slowly eroding the physical, psychological and cultural landscape. Seems to me such an evil, life-strangling root is in need of chopping.

WHY IS THIS TOPIC IMPORTANT TO YOU? It’s happening around my family orchard in western North Carolina.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVE SOCIAL ACTION SONGS? The ones that don’t preach so much as present.

WHICH, IF ANY CAUSES DO YOU ACTIVELY SUPPORT – AND HOW? I support local farmers with my wallet and my guitar (Hoots & Hellmouth did a Harvest Tour this fall on regional farms to celebrate the harvest and call attention to the importance of farms in the community)

. DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? We were assisted in a multitude of ways. Farm folk are amazingly generous and resourceful! We are looking forward to working with many of them again on making our 2010 Harvest Tour even better.

DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE: Anyone with ears to hear.

WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? They are each and every one unique unto themselves. We love how diverse our audiences have been thus far.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? Where the audiences are gathered with open ears, open hearts and open arms.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND’S MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Main stage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival was pretty freaking amazing. But so is driving around the country in the van.

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? New tracks, tours and fun.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… Best left to its own devices!

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Living.

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? I honestly don’t know what our fans might find surprising. We listen to so much variety within the band, it’d be great to imagine that we attract similarly open-minded music appreciators.

NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: Animal Collective, Antony & The Johnsons and MGMT.
