WHERE WAS SONG RECORDED? New York City and Los Angeles
WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? My music is available for digital purchase on iTunes, for physical purchase on my Web site – www.katiecostellomusic.com – and for listening purposes on all social media networks.
WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? My music can best be described as kitschy/edgy/Folk/Pop. This rare hybrid is therefore deemed Kitchedge-Fop.
WHAT’S THE SONG “INSIDE OUT: ABOUT? “Inside Out” discusses the doubts we all have in our lives and the concept of letting it all go. Living with vulnerability and taking risks is the only way to live gloriously.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THE TRACK “SONGBIRD” TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? My Magic 8-ball told me “outlook good.”
WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? This particular arrangement of the song is done with a double vocal, a cello strummed as a guitar, and some bumpin’ synth ditties throughout. I think it’s a very interesting grouping of sounds.
DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? If by fans you mean me and a select and vulnerable group of others that I happened to swindle into this project, then yes.
WHO IS SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? My audience is the young and the old, the poor and the slightly less poor, the beauties and the beasts, and all else in-between. I believe my audience is comprised of sensitive individuals who like to discuss and talk about feelings…while still being intimidating badasses. Like me, they know humans are not perfect and have big dreams for the future.
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? They are typically far smarter, cunning and agile than all others in proximity.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? The Hotel Café in Los Angeles and Rockwood Music Hall in New York City.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Being nominated for an IMA! KCRW picking “Kaleidoscope Machine” as their Top Tune of the Day on Morning Becomes Eclectic was a highlight. Also, sweet placements on shows like Private Practice, One Tree Hill and 90210 are paying for the new CD!
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? Finishing the new CD for a spring release and touring.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… Moist, awesome, ebbing and flowing.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? In my eyes, being successful is achieving independence, happiness and creative glory without having compromised any concept of oneself. Also, having lots of money and the ability to dangerously persuade others into doing morally questionable activities. Just kidding.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? My favorite band in the world is X. I’m also super into Destiny’s Child.
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: My favorite people and artists that also happen to be my friends are: Lucy Schwartz, Joey Ryan, Greg Holden and the Madison Square Gardeners.
ARTIST BIO:
Standing at a mediocre five feet, four inches tall, Katie Costello is a living homage to the saying ‘never judge a book by its cover.’ Despite her diminutive stature, and having accumulated only minimal years of existence, her mighty imagination yields a one-of-a-kind kazoo virtuosity and a unique lyrical approach to her vintage-esque original tunes. Musical inspirations for Katie include Billie Holliday, X, Fiona Apple, New Buffalo, and Bob Dylan.
When not ‘song-doodling’, as she has been known to call it, Katie can be found sulking in public libraries, skimming through critically acclaimed tween drama-comedy novels, and/or collecting cute rocks with fun personalities from her hometown Hermosa Beach, or some other rock-abundant natural setting.
What some might deem an old-soul, Katie prefers to consider herself a grandma stuck inside a slightly less matronly body. In addition to playing the super slick Los Angeles and New York club scenes, she performs regularly at homes for the elderly in compliance with her inner octogenarian.
Despite her biting sarcasm and unrepentant banter, Katie truly strives to be a sounding voice for the hopelessly warped, while simultaneously promoting the significance and paramount need for genuine creative passion. Now living in Brooklyn, NY, Katie Costello is attempting (and marginally fulfilling) living the dream.
Katie’s music is on KCRW (89.9 Santa Monica) ‘Morning Becomes Eclectic’ & was chosen as their “KCRW Top Tune of the Day” free iTunes download.
Her songs have been featured on the CW shows “90210,” “One Tree Hill,” and ABC’s “Private Practice.”
‘Kaleidoscope Machine’ is available on iTunes & was the iTunes ‘Indie Artist Spotlight’.

This is probably the best song I’ve heard in a while. I’ve just recently purchased the album on Itunes and I love it. This girl is incredible. Her voice is so unique and the music is just joyful to listen to. I enjoy it thoroughly.
