What’s the meaning of your band name? The meaning of Konshens & His State of Mind derived from the phonetic spelling of the word “Conscience” I chose that name for an EMCEE because I feel as though I say what most people really feel and in my mind Hip Hop sounds like live instrumentation thus I named the band State of Mind, hence Konshens & His State of Mind.

Describe your nominated work: The Perfect fusion of Hip Hop, Jazz, Funk, Soul, R&B and go-go intertwined with lyrical rhyme

Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMA’s? Because of all the award ceremony’s recognizing the work of independent artist, The IMA’s actually have a reputable track record that is backed by seasoned musical enthusiast that have longevity in music and know what good music is.

Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording? no

Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned? For the most part everything goes as planned. Lol outside of the occasional wrong note being played in what we all thought was a perfect recording…

Did fans help you fund this project? No, well yes, one of my biggest fans, my father who was a musician as well. Upon his passing he told me that he knows my love and goals in music and wanted me to use my portion of funds received as a result of his passing to finish the funding of the project.

Who’s sitting in your audience? Music Lovers

What makes your fans unique? They understand the story I’m telling. And are very supportive….I consider them extended family members as oppose to fans.

Are there any songs you wish you wrote? Fortunately, I was taught the importance in writing all your material….

What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans? Cee-lo green, Prince and James Brown

What is your dream show lineup? wow….lets see: The Roots, Maroon 5, Mos Def, Scarface, and Konshens & His State of Mind

What is your guilty pleasure on the road? I appreciate Mother Nature….lol

Any close calls or mishaps while on tour? Close calls…. lol of course! Rushing and making it last minute to appts. But it’s a strange kindve joy wrapped in the midst of it.

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? A band prayer followed by making fun of each other…..gotta laugh and have fun.

Should music be free? promotional materials, yes.

How has digital affected your career? In a positive light because increased exposure and visibility is the life line for an independent artist.

Are digital singles vs. full albums the future of music? no, I think its being made to seem that way. I believe why most people prefer to buy singles is because artist aren’t putting out “FULL albums” like they used to. Meaning a body of work where as a listener you can tell one’s heart and soul was put into it.
