WHERE WAS YOUR RELEASE RECORDED? Loft Recording Studios (Columbus, GA)
DESCRIBE THE INSPIRATION FOR YOUR RELEASE: A failed intervention, sung from the perspective of the resistant party being intervened upon.
IS IT BIOGRAPHICAL? Not totally.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS RELEASE TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAS? My label submitted the EP; the IMA’s selected the title track to feature from the album’s nomination.
WHAT/ IF ANY UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS, SONG STRUCTURE/WRITING TECHNIQUES, RECORDING METHODS DID YOU USE? Some harmonic and improvisatory dissonance. Even though we tracked in a studio, we used their warehouse and halls, not the studio’s controlled environments.
DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? not directly.
DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE: Not sure how to categorize it yet. It seems older classic rock fans like what I do. And, younger kids wanting to experiment with something a little different. So far my audience is shaping mostly through venues I play and headliner bands I support.
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? That they actually know who I am.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? Places where people come to listen. I don’t like being a jukebox.
WHAT HAS BEEN YOUR MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Probably opening for Rodrigo y Gabriela at the Tabernacle plus Arc Angels and Robin Trower at the Variety Playhouse — both venues in Atlanta GA.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR THE REST OF 2010? 2011? Another EP – we might release it on vinyl and via download card. Also to continue to grow and know more fans.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… kinetic
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? The achievement of one’s values.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? I don’t have an iPod, maybe that will surprise my fans.
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: David Tronzo
ARTIST BIO:
The twenty-five year old roots-rock and blues singer-songwriter-guitarist grew up in typical Americana, where science was the fabric of his family. After finding a guitar in his attic at the age thirteen, Marshall taught himself to play. Just several short years later, he majored in jazz performance at the Berklee College of Music. It was while in Boston, Ruffin recognized and tapped into his songwriting skills and vocal gifts. Within a year after graduation, Marshall moved to Columbus GA for some MA Rainey education, opened for dozens of regional and national artists, and signed with Jammates Records. After experiencing a Marshall Ruffin performance, one only expects his momentum to accelerate. Rich Man’s Dime, his freshman EP, was released in February ’08 and spent eight weeks on the roots/blues charts ending the year at no. 4 on Georgia Roots Radio. Morning Glory, his 2009 sophomore effort, hit the streets Sept. 15th. Marshall Ruffin was also a nominated artist for the 9th Season of The Independent Music Awards Blues Album category. Marshall Ruffin will be playing solo and with his trio throughout east coast music venues in support of the new release.

Marshall has found a powerful balance of blues and grunge rock. The only match for the growl of his guitar is the howl of his voice. An artist wise beyond his young years.
