HOMEBASE/COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: I’m a Canadian living in Austin, Texas, USA. I moved here from Calgary, Alberta a year and a half ago.

ALBUM NOMINATED SONG IS ON: Coming Into View

ARTISTS ON THIS TRACK: Myself. The whole album is solo piano.

WHERE WAS SONG RECORDED? The song was recorded in my studio in Calgary before I moved down to Austin.

WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? My music can be bought directly from my Web site, or via Amazon.com, iTunes, CD Baby and select retail outlets.

WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? I prefer the term Contemporary Instrumental, although it will generally be categorized as New Age music. It’s mostly improvised, calm piano music with impressionistic tones to it.

WHAT’S THIS SONG ABOUT? This is a song of hope, of being inspired and lifted up by something bigger than you.

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? Even though other tracks on the CD are getting more radio play, this is one of my favorites.

WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? This song has improvised elements and then settles into a more traditional song structure and melody as it gets going.

DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? No, this project was self-funded.

DESCRIBE YOUR AUDIENCE: I have a pretty wide ranging audience of people who just like music that helps calm and soothe the soul. I hear from teenagers and elderly alike. Sometimes I’ll hear from people who otherwise like heavy Metal and forms of music that sound nothing like my music, but at the end of the day we all have times in our lives where we just want quiet and to relax.

WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? I think the general diversity of types of listeners is what would be considered unique about my fans.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? I am still in the process of determining what my live show will look like, and mostly make music in my own studio setting late at night after everything is quiet.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BANDS’ MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? The CD’s been nominated for a number of awards this year and has been in the top 10 charts for its genre. I’m just happy to be getting the music out there after wanting to release a CD for many years. This is my debut project and it has been going well, so far.

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? I am working on a follow-up CD which should be released in the first half of the year, and hope to start doing some live shows by then.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS…..Changing rapidly. The playing field has been leveled and now the challenge for artists is to cut through the noise and stand out. It’s a good time to be an independent artist, and it’s also a good time to be on the other side as a listener. There is a lot of truly great independent music out there ready to be heard.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? To me, success is hearing ways that my music has touched and stirred people deep within their soul, and getting that kind of feedback from a diverse group of people. I want to keep putting out quality music and expect that some of the more traditional means of measuring success will follow when the time is right.

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? I don’t spend my whole day listening to piano music. I listen to lots of guitar driven Rock, singer/songwriters, even some Country and Hip-Hop as all over the map as that seems. Part of it comes from my background running a studio and doing production music in various genres. I also have been getting to know some of the local music scene here in Austin, so much of what is spinning in my iPod is local.

NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: If you like my music, you should check out Chad Lawson. Someone else I think more people should know about is Eric Harry. He’s got much of his music up on his Internet station CalmRadio.com, so you can have a listen there.
