WHERE WAS SONG RECORDED? San Francisco, California, USA
WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? Our Web site (www.orthewhale.com), iTunes, Amazon, eMusic, Rhapsody, and stores nationwide.
WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Americana, Indie Folk/Alt-Country
WHAT’S THIS SONG ABOUT? Hurricane Katrina
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? We feel that it is a good representation of our sound, with an anthemic “call and response” (no pun intended) structure, lots of vocal harmonies and heavy pedal steel. It also has a very powerful message.
WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? We recorded this album in less than a week. It being our first effort, we were more than pleased with the turnout, considering we had never recorded together in a professional studio and we were sort of winging it.
DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? Yes. We saved a year’s worth of live show and merch profits to pay for the studio time and pressing.
WHO IS SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? Our audience is made up of real music lovers. Sometimes they’re rowdy and raucous, sometimes they’re cerebral and sometimes they’re there just to listen and reflect. We have fans as young as three years-old and as old as eighty. Indie kids, housewives, baby-boomers, business executives-it runs the gambit. Every show brings new faces and we’re incredibly thankful that we continue to draw in fresh ears.
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? They’re nice. Really, they are. Club owners repeatedly tell us how gracious and respectful they are. But they definitely know how to have a good time. They get involved in the show, screaming, singing along, dancing and shaking tambourines.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? The Great American Music Hall and The Independent in San Francisco, CA; The Tractor Tavern in Seattle, WA; The Doug Fir in Portland, OR; The Casbah in San Diego, CA and Hotel Cafe in Los Angeles, CA.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND’S MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Playing on Good Morning America.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? A tour routing to SXSW, another tour through The Rockies, new videos and new songs, and maybe Europe.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS…A really tough business. But if you can figure out a strategy that works for your band, then it can be really rewarding.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Going a whole tour without sleeping on a floor.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? R Kelly.
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: The Maldives from Seattle,WA; Hello Kavita from Denver, CO; Telegraph Canyon and Midlake from Fort Worth, TX.
