Bio: Pharez Whitted has performed with such notable musicians as Freddie Hubbard, Joe Lovano, Ahmad Jamal, Branford Marsalis, Ramsey Lewis, Kirk Whalum, Phil Woods, and John Mellancamp. He continues to perform nationally and internationally, including the 1988 Presidential Inauguration, The Arsenio Hall Show, The Billboard Music Awards, Carnegie Hall and the MoTown Music Showcase. Whitted released two albums on the MoTown jazz label MoJazz entitled Pharez Whitted and Mysterious Cargo. His third solo album Transient Journey released in 2010 on the Owl Studios label has been nominated for an Independent Music Award. Mr. Whitted is currently Director of Jazz Studies at Chicago State University. Pharez Whitted is a Conn-Selmer clinician and a jazz mentor for Ravinia’s Music Performance Program.

Describe your nominated work: Music about life.

Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMA’s? Being nominated by working artists and my peers is an honor. Knowing that other professionals are diggin’ what I’m doing is great!

Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording? No.

Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned? Nothing goes as planned.

Who’s sitting in your audience? Everybody from little children to 90 year old people, all across the world.

What makes your fans unique? They think.

What is your dream show lineup? Miles Davis, Trane, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Stevie Wonder

What is your guilty pleasure on the road? Doughnuts.

Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? I warm up.

Should music be free? Music is always free.

How has digital affected your career? Makes it more accessible to other people.

Are digital singles vs. full albums the future of music? Let’s hope not.
