What’s the meaning of your band name? Pokey LaFarge is my name. The South City Three because they are all from South City St. Louis.
Describe your nominated work? 9 original songs, 3 old, old tunes, a few rags, a few blues, a waltz; Some hokum, strong imagery in storytelling, heartbreak, triumph over hardship, general merriment, swinging beats
Why did you choose to submit this work to The 10th IMAs? We thought, as independent artists, that the IMAs were the perfect place to submit our work for possible recognition.
Did you use any unusual effects or instruments in this recording? Nope. No effects. I played a homemade guitjo from 1900. That’s pretty unusual.
Were there any happy accidents while in the studio, or did everything go as planned? I can’t really remember specifics. But I know from experience that there are always happy mistakes.
Did fans help you fund this project? Only creatively.
Who’s sitting in your audience? People at a theater. Standing otherwise.
What makes your fans unique?: They, in most cases, know honest to goodness American music and why it’s so important.
Are there any songs you wish you wrote? “Hong Kong Blues” by Hoagy Carmichael.
What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans? Don’t know if any of them would be a surprise but here’s what I’ve been listening to: Emmitt Miller, Hot Club of Cowtown,Tim O’Brien.
What is your dream show lineup? Well it would comprise mostly of people that aren’t living anymore. So instead here’s my dream line up of present day artists. Red Stick Ramblers, Hot Club of Cowtown, Junior Brown, Frank Fairfield, Blind Boy Paxton, Rum Drum Ramblers, Two Man Gentleman Band, Meschiya Lake, Tuba Skinny and myself.
What are your guilty pleasures on the road? Playing stupid van games, telling jokes, nicknames, biting my nails, eating BBQ and country food, buying records and old clothes.
Any close calls or mishaps while on tour? Except for the occasional scary semi truck or sex solicitation it’s been a-ok.
Do you have any rituals before you go on stage? Vocal warm up. Stretching.
Should music be free? Certainly a relative question. The musicians, agents, managers, etc. need to get paid somehow, right?
How has digital affected your career? Easier and quicker to find contacts, book shows and keep in touch with people. Also of course folks can keep up on our latest news down to the day it happens.
Are digital singles vs. full albums the future of music? A little of both. I listen to 78′s so singles are of course not new to me. Heck, we have a 78 coming out of our own. We just did a 7”inch which will also be avail for download. But i still love the convenience of a whole CD and even more so the LP.
Finish this sentence: The music industry is…well i’m tempted to cut and paste what Hunter S. Thompson said about it in here but instead……the music industry is something you shouldn’t take too seriously. Find things out for yourself. Don’t let them force you to listen to things you don’t want to listen to. Use the advantages of technology that allow you to find any music you want. The music industry creates the names for genres. Don’t let them pigeonhole you.

Excellent nomination! I noticed that their home state is listed as Maryland but the boys are actually from St. Louis, Missouri. Thanks!
