DESCRIBE YOUR NOMINATED WORK: The idea to make an EP came out of my desire and need to have something tangible people could take away from our shows. I’d recently written a song where I say “every song I hear is a souvenir” and I realized it was the perfect sentiment and’Souvenir’was the perfect title. I recorded the EP with Thad DeBrock in the various spaces of a Brooklyn apartment, we had the amp in the bedroom, me singing in the bathroom, it was challenging at times but incredibly fun. There are three songs: “Souvenir”, “Beautiful Disaster” (a song of mine previously recorded by Kelly Clarkson), and “Unspoken Words.”

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO SUBMIT THIS WORK TO THE 10TH IMA’S? I didn’t submit with any expectations, just with the belief that The IMA’s are a great platform for independent music. I thought it’d be a nice thing to be a part of and could help more people hear the EP.

DID FANS HELP YOU FUND THIS PROJECT? No, this project was self funded from savings and bartending.
Who’s sitting in your audience? People of all ages and colors, and at least one person who wants to buy us a drink.
What artists are you listening to that would surprise your fans? I love latin pop, Julieta Venegas has been a favorite for quite some time.

WHAT ARE YOUR GUILTY PLEASURES ON THE ROAD? I feel too guilty to say.

ANY CLOSE CALLS OR MISHAPS WHILE ON TOUR? Once I thought it would be a fun idea to travel in a Winnebago. I named her Winnie. Cute as she was, she couldn’t go faster than 60 mph without violently shaking like she was coming apart. It took forever to get anywhere. We hit a bump one night and I was thrown from the bed. So yeah, no more winnebagos.

DO YOU HAVE ANY RITUALS BEFORE YOU GO ON STAGE? Ginger chews, a few moments alone, and a hug or moment with whoever I’m playing with.

SHOULD MUSIC BE FREE? Yes and no. I like the idea of a free song or two as an incentive or as a show of gratitude. But I have too great a respect for music, the art of making it, and the musicians who play it to believe in the concept of it all being free. In an ideal world, the goal would be to have a body of work – be it an album or EP or whatever you choose to call it, for purchase. If all music is free, then what makes it special? What makes it worthy of respect? And how does that encourage anyone to follow their passion for it and choose it as a career?

HOW HAS DIGITAL AFFECTED YOUR CAREER? I think it helps people find music they might otherwise not have heard. And for me, it is a great medium for building and communicating.

ARE DIGITAL SINGLES VS. FULL ALBUMS THE FUTURE OF MUSIC? I hope they are both the future. I hope that singles serve as an introduction to great albums.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… not easy, but music is a journey of faith.
