Ronin E-Ville

Eclectronica: electronically produced music
that draws on a variety of sources and genres.

“Say no to weak beats!” Those are words to live by for Toronto-based producer and DJ Colin Patrick McGuire (a.k.a. Ronin E-Ville) who produces his bass-kicking tracks by manipulating various musical styles and genres. His new album Big Dirty HiFi, a follow-up to his sophomore album Ronin vs. C-Bone (2004), is a confluence of electro, breaks, house, techno, dub, acid jazz, trip hop, lounge, IDM, funk, and rock.

A ronin is a master-less samurai; the samurai were the warriors of ancient Japan. E-Ville refers to Colin’s hometown of Edmonton (known to some as E-Town), while Ronin honours his passion for martial arts and eastern philosophies. The purpose of Ronin E-Ville is to enliven listeners with musical kung fu.

Colin began his study of music as a trumpet player, although the genesis of his musical career dates back to 1996, when he was serendipitously led from a jazz club to a rave. Shortly thereafter, he embarked upon the path of a beat creator, composer and purveyor, completing a BFA in music and a MA in Ethnomusicology/Musicology (composition field) from York University.

Colin’s music has since been largely influenced by his study of electro-acoustics, club/rave, urban, rock, blues, jazz, and world music. Digitally assembled using an Apple computer, his sound is an organic combination of programming, synths, samples, and recordings of live instruments and voices. Working with a Torq mp3/vinyl system has allowed his work to further expand and defy definition. A skilled, hybrid artist and DJ, at a party he is likely to throw down a set of electro, house, electronica, breaks, hip hop, funk or disco. A lounge event might conjure a unique blend of acid jazz, rare groove, deeo house, trip hop, hip hop, or dub.

Currently a lecturer in digital music at York University, Colin still finds time to develop and deliver seminars on digital audio and music. As a composer, he participated in Nuit Blanche 2007, FFIDA 2005 (fringe festival of independent dance artists) and collaborated on a production of Ballet Creole’s Pepper. Recent DJ gigs include the Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation fundraiser at the National Film Board Mediatheque, the Miss Canada International and Miss Teen Canada International Pageant at the Living Arts Centre in Mississauga, and Liberty Entertainment’s Funkn’ Fashion parties at the Courthouse Chamber Lounge. Ronin is promoting the new album Big Dirty HiFi, which promises to be a formidable fusion of several styles and aural influences.
