WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Children’s Music in a variety of musical styles (Pop, Blues, Calypso, R&B, Jazz …)
DESCRIBE THE STORY BEHIND THIS SONG: Our step-father went to the South Pole and came back with pictures and descriptions of how penguins moved and behaved. We were inspired to write a Children’s song called “Penguin Shuffle” that would get kids waddling and shuffling like those tuxedo-wearing penguins!
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? “Penguin Shuffle” has that 60s beach-party groove that always gets the kids, as well as their parents, up dancing at our shows. So, we knew it had some appeal. We also had a lot of fun writing the song and felt that it was one of our better, more humorous lyrics. It just puts us in a good mood whenever we hear it, so we knew it was a good submission!
WHY DO YOU WRITE MUSIC FOR CHILDREN? Andie has two children ages five and seven who were the original inspirations for writing the songs. Writing Children’s music provides an opportunity to produce a variety of musical styles while exploring limitless topics.
WHAT IS THE SECRET TO CREATING APPEALING MUSIC FOR CHILDREN? Children like songs with great rhythms, catchy melodies and fun lyrics. And they love to sing and dance! It’s important to create music that allows them to use their imaginations and creativity in their own way. The songs have to be playful and fun while still being concise and clear for the average four to six year-old to grasp.
DO YOU FACTOR IN HOW PARENTS WILL RESPOND TO IT? Absolutely! After all, we’re parents too, so we understand the need to create music that’s not only appealing to children, but keeps the grown-ups happy too. One of the funniest testimonials we ever received was from a dad who said “When my kids ask for The Bee’s Knees, I don’t think of jumping out of the moving car!”
DO YOU ALSO RELEASE MUSIC FOR OLDER AUDIENCES? The Bee’s Knees only write and release Children’s music.
WHERE HAVE YOU TOURED? We’ve been playing mostly around Southern Ontario doing festivals, in-store performances and private shows.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY? Schools are great because the kids are so excited to be entertained in the middle of their day. Basically, we like to play anywhere there are children who want to sing and dance!
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND’S MOST EXCITING MOMENT TO DATE? We were nominated for a Canadian Independent Music Award in 2008 for Best Children’s Group, as well as the John Lennon Songwriting Contest that year for Best Children’s Song. However, the highlight so far was probably listening to our mastered debut CD for the first time. It was the realization of a dream.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? We’re in the process of developing an animated children’s television series for The Bee’s Knees!
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS … A fickle mistress.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Success is maintaining your passion and joy for doing the things you love to do best. It’s waking up happy knowing that you can go to work and make a difference in the field of your choice.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Imogen Heap and Puccini.
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: Justin Hines and Jack Johnson.
