ALBUM NOMINATED: Dirty king
WHERE WAS ALBUM RECORDED? Weed, California, USA
WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? Worldwide digitally and on CD in North America, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK and Australia.
WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Rock ‘n’Roll / Garage Rock
IS THERE A THEME TO THE ALBUM? I’m not sure I could say there is a definite theme that resonates in every song, but there is definitely a thematic presence in many songs about loss-loss of trust and loss of self.
WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? I think the most unusual instrument used on this recording might have been the use of a toy piano played with drum sticks on “Emily.” Also on “Emily,” we had to smash a mirror in the middle of the street in the little town of Weed in Northern California.
On “Falling Overboard,” I did a backing vocal track using an discarded Drive In Movie Theatre speaker as well as using the pick-ups on a hollow bodied Gretsch guitar as a microphone.
I also loved the use of the Mellotron on “Animal Farm.” It’s an ancient keyboard and we were lucky enough that Radio Star studios had one.
My favorite and most unusual recording process on this record was that Sylvia Massy had me do all the backing vocals with a hand-held mic in the control room, not in a isolation booth. It was completely different and I loved it because it made me feel so much more confident in the parts.
DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? No.
WHO IS SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? I think our audience is very diverse, but there is definitely a very queer presence within the diverse. We have a lot of female fans, as well.
WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? Their commitment and loyalty to the band. I also think our fans love the uniqueness of The Cliks and what they represent, which in part outside the music, is about being true to yourself.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? Without hesitation, New York City and Cambridge, MA. And of course, home, Toronto.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND’S MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Being invited to perform at both of Cyndi Lauper’s True Colors tours.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? Touring, touring and hopefully, more touring.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… Unpredictable.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Being able to make a living doing what you love to do.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Wham! But I don’t think much surprises my fans.
