“Cool to Be Uncool” from the Trying Funny Stuff DVD.

HOMEBASE/COUNTRY OF ORIGIN: New York City, USA

NAME OF BAND MEMBERS: Ashley Albert and The Guys in Ties

NAME OF ALBUM NOMINATED: The Jimmies, Trying Funny Stuff, two-disc DVD (with songs from the “Make Your Own Someday” CD).

WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? Exclusively at Barnes and Noble until February 2010 (Can you even believe it?!?) AND at http://GimmeJimmies.com…and also digitally at places like iTunes, Digstation and CD Baby. All the fancy spots.

WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Kindie Rock

DESCRIBE THE STORY BEHIND YOUR DVD: The idea behind the DVD itself was to make content for kids that took them seriously… and exposed them to a wide variety of mustaches.

The concert snippet in question is a one-two punch of a couple of songs called “Somebody’s Birthday” and “Birthday.” I happen to be a BIG fan of birthdays. It’s really the one holiday that’s all your own and a chance for all of the important people that you’ve collected along the way to get together and celebrate the fact that you exist. Plus, there’s cake. What’s better than that?

WHY DO YOU WRITE MUSIC FOR CHILDREN? I feel like I don’t intentionally write songs for kids. I just write songs and they usually turn out to be most relatable to Third Graders. Boogers and bedhead are just what comes up for me…emotionally.

WHAT IS THE SECRET TO CREATING APPEALING MUSIC FOR CHILDREN? When I write something that I find myself singing on a loop as I go about my day or that makes me snortle out loud, I know I’ve got a winner.

DO YOU FACTOR IN HOW PARENTS WILL RESPOND TO IT? There is truly no bigger complement a parent can give me than telling me that they are officially sick of my songs. Makes me blush.

DO YOU ALSO RELEASE MUSIC FOR OLDER AUDIENCES? Nope. I like to think The Jimmies can get the biggest (and smallest) toes a’tappin’.

HOW DOES THE PROCESS DIFFER WHEN WRITING FOR ADULTS? Well, there’s no cursing involved. And I don’t usually sing about love lost or driving or purchasing insurance. That’s about it, I think.

WHERE HAVE YOU TOURED? We’ve played all over the country at places like Lollapalooza, World Cafe Live, Jammin’ Java, Symphony Space and Austin City Limits. Yeah, we rock the house a little bit.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY? The Sarasota Film Festival…It was our very first gig ever and we’ve gone back to play every year since. They treat us like total rock stars and the snack options are top-notch. Plus, we get to see all of the movies!

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND’S MOST EXCITING MOMENT TO DATE? When Mrs. Shorn’s first grade class in San Diego, CA sent us a note letting us know that they were singing “Do The Elephant” at their school assembly! Fantastic!

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? Yikes. So much. I’m just about finished with our next album, (Every Day’s A Holiday), working on a TV show pitch and a book idea…implementing a dry erase board system…a lot.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS…Not as scary as everyone thinks it is.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Having the resources and freedom to accurately transfer ideas from your head into the world.

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Danger Mouse, Kid Rock, Brak, Led Zeppelin and Japanese language lessons.

NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: Scribblemonster, Dogs on Fleas, Recess Monkey, The Hipwaders and Caspar Babypants. I would like nothing more than to help make Kindie Rock more accessible to parents who don’t have time to investigate beyond the mainstream children’s music market. The kids wanna rock, I just know it.
