WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? Jazz, Rock, Experimental, Fusion
WHAT’S THIS SONG ABOUT? The way that when you do something with all your heart and believe in it 100% everyone around you will feel that energy and get behind you on what you’re trying to do.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? All of our fans love this song, friends of ours that haven’t seen us in months or even years can be caught humming the melody and it will be cool to see if we can get that happening even more!
WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? Well, trombone as a lead instrument is kind of unusual, but more importantly, we recorded this song live in the studio. Our engineer liked to joke that the space we recorded in was no bigger than the studio where Coltrane recorded “My Favorite Things,” so clearly not an unusual thing, but definitely a quality method to chase after.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? Really intimate venues where the show is much more of a conversation with our audience than a presentation of our work.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE BAND’S MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? We actually had scheduled a whole 12-day tour before we had actually held our first official band rehearsal. Once our schedules put us all in the same place, we had five weeks to get our acts together and head out on the road. Playing that tour and getting the solid response we had was a really memorable moment for me; a very condensed showing of the value of hard work.
WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? We’ve been working on some brand new music that really digs into alternate song structures and different approaches to musical notation. If all goes well it could lead us to another record, if not finished in 2010, then at least started toward the end of the year.
FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… A little lost right now, but it’s really exciting to see some of the new ideas that are coming out of all the confusion. One of my favorite lyricists, Gavin Castleton, once sang “If there’s no more beer at the party the only people left will be there for the conversation,” and the conversation in music is getting better all the time.
WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Getting to do what you want to do the way you want to do it. Can We Go Back Where We Began? is an example of that, now we’ve got new and different things we’re chasing after. It’s a fun ride.
WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Wallpaper. They are completely Pop, but completely so much fun!
NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: Kneebody, who are always doing something cool and new. They’ve just gotten nominated for a Grammy, so clearly the championing is working. Jaga Jazzist, a great 10-piece band out of Norway that never seems stops searching for cooler ways to be awesome. The RX Bandits, an amazing progressive Punk band out of CA, who never cease to amaze me on record or on stage.
