WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO COVER THIS SONG AND WHY THIS INTERPRETATION? We were asked to select a song by Morrissey or The Smiths for a music blog called The Music Slut, in honor of Morrissey’s 50th birthday. “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” was suggested by JJ (our drummer) and another friend. The planets aligned.
The Smiths’ version is quite happy and bouncy, in an ironic way, and all the other covers we found of it were similarly upbeat. We decided to go for an absolutely un-ironic, straightforward interpretation.
WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? We got a lot of positive feedback on our recording, so we thought it a worthy choice.
HOW DO YOU MAKE A COVER TUNE TRULY YOURS? You should be able to find yourself in a song you choose to cover. If you can’t add anything to the original artist’s work, don’t bother doing it. It’s really interesting when a cover of a song sheds a completely different light on the lyrics.
