WHERE WAS SONG RECORDED? The song was initially recorded at home. The guitar and vocals were done in one take. Bass was overdubbed after that. Harmonica was added at Taylor Made studios in Gainesville (where the remainder of the album was recorded) and the whole thing was seamlessly mixed by the gifted audio engineer Glenn Taylor.

WHERE IS YOUR MUSIC AVAILABLE? We are available at CDbaby.com, iTunes, LaLa, Amazon.com, Napster, Rhapsody and of course www.usedbluesband.com.

WHICH GENRES BEST DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC? We are a Blues band, but our influences are varied and diverse. There’s a bit of an Indie Rock edge to our music, and, of course, a lot of classic Blues mojo.

WHAT’S THIS SONG ABOUT? It’s a story song about someone who gets a very unfortunate palm reading. The song is meant to evoke the melding of Christianity and superstition/folklore you hear in a lot of traditional Blues, particularly from the pre-WWII era.

WHY DID YOU SELECT THIS TRACK TO SUBMIT TO THE IMAs? The song affects audiences. It seems to have a certain haunting power to it.

WHAT UNUSUAL INSTRUMENTS OR TECHNIQUES DID YOU USE ON THIS ALBUM? The guitar used on the song is an old S.S. Stewart Archtop. I’m not sure of the year, but it could date as far back as 1931, though the body type was used for some time after that. The guitar was sent to me unexpectedly by an old friend, a drummer, who disappeared on me about a decade back. Anyway, it has a great sound and feel for slide guitar and the Blues.

DID FANS HELP FUND THIS PROJECT? Yes. The album was funded through gig profits.

WHO IS SITTING IN YOUR AUDIENCE? That’s a difficult one. Blues audiences sometimes tend to be a slightly older demographic, but we have a large following in younger college towns, as well. So, we really have a very diverse fan base.

WHAT MAKES YOUR FANS UNIQUE? There really is no typical UBb fan. From Blues afficianados to scene hipsters, our fans appreciate soulful, heart-felt Roots music. Oh, and they love to have a good time, which we make sure they do at our shows.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE PLACES TO PLAY? The Rum Boogie in Memphis, Tennessee, The Tin Cup in Ocala, Florida, the Bo Diddley in Gainesville, the Big Deck in Cedar Key, Florida, and of course Club Red (R.I.P.) in Gainesville.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE BANDS’ MOST MEMORABLE ACHIEVEMENT TO DATE? Writing, recording and producing our album, Deep Down in Florida. It’s been very well received and we’re pretty pleased with it.

WHAT’S IN THE WORKS FOR 2010? More writing, playing and recording.

FINISH THIS SENTENCE: THE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS… Due for another Blues revival.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF SUCCESS? Producing the music we love for an appreciative audience.

WHAT’S ON YOUR IPOD THAT WOULD SURPRISE YOUR FANS? Right now, Christmas music. I especially enjoy the Ultra Lounge Holiday collection. I’m also listening to a lot of Ambulance, Ltd., the Clash, Tom Waits, Curtis Mayfield, David Bowie, Louis Prima.

NAME SOME ARTISTS YOU ARE CHAMPIONING: Jon Justice and Willie “Big Toe” Green.
