ARTIST NAME: Emily Arin

HOMETOWN/CURRENTLY BASED: Originally from Los Angeles, now based in the sleepy village of Montour Falls in the Finger Lakes region of New York.

WEB SITES: www.emilyarin.com, www.myspace.com/emilyarin

INFLUENCES: Oh my, the list is long–and every growing! Leonard Cohen, Gillian Welch & David Rawlings, Caetano Veloso, Townes Van Zandt, Os Mutantes, Sybille Baier, Asha Bhosle, John Prine, Van Morrison, Hank Williams, Joni Mitchell, West African Kora music, Glen Gould, Paul Simon, Billy Bragg, Miriam Makeba, Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan, Mississippi John Hurt, The Carter Family, Frank Sinatra, Brian Eno, Neil Young, Tom Waits, Vashti Bunyan, Yo La Tengo, Nick Drake, Edith Piaf, Amalia Rodriguez, Yann Tiersen, Cat Power, Buena Vista Social Club, Enya, Peggy Lee, Beatles (together and apart), Coleman Hawkins, Phil Ochs, Calexico, Thelonius Monk, Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ennio Morricone, Billie Holiday, Gordon Lightfoot, Josh Ritter, Will Oldham, Emmylou Harris, Nick Cave, Orchestra Baobob, Willie Nelson, Cesaria Evora, Tom Petty, Salty Austin, Memphis Minnie, Glen Gould, Cat Stevens….

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Twice being a guest on Vin Scelsa’s Idiot’s Delight show on WFUV and Satellite Radio’s The Loft. Opening for The Mountain Goats on September 18, 2009 at Ithaca College.

I SUBMITTED TO THE INDEPENDENT MUSIC AWARDS BECAUSE… I love the panel of judges.

I’M PROUD TO BE AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST BECAUSE: You have to constantly assess your motivation for doing what you’re doing (songwriting, performing, promoting, booking, etc.), and I think this keeps you open and honest as an artist. There’s no pressure to conform–you’re free to carve out your own identity and to let it evolve over time.

WHAT’S NEXT: Opening for the Mountain Goats, playing a few shows in Austin in mid-October and then heading to Philadelphia into the studio with Greg Weeks (Espers, Language of Stone) for my first studio album. Then….who knows?

SUCCESS = Contentment

WHAT MAKES MY BAND STAND OUT: Besides being amazing musicians, they tend to smile while they play. Brian Dozoretz on upright bass, Peter Glanville on electric guitar and Gordon Rowland on mandolin/accordian.

WHERE I TOUR: I haven’t done any extended tours yet, but I play with some frequency in Ithaca, NY and New York City/Brooklyn. I’ll be branching out to Austin soon and am aiming to hit the road a bit in 2010.

MY FAVORITE VENUE TO PLAY: The Harvest Cafe Lounge. In the spirit of full disclosure, this is my family’s venue and I am the current booking contact. But the reason it’s my favorite venue is the atmosphere, the sound, the staff, and the agenda: to bring great live music to Montour Falls–a sleep village in the northern-most county of Appalachia (approximately 5 hours from NYC). The town, like so many others in upstate New York, virtually shut down when the manufacturing plant (cranes and hoists, in this case) closed in the 80s. A few years ago, my parents purchased a cafe to help revitalize the community. This past year, a beer and wine license was acquired, a stage built, lights and curtains hung and, this summer, we held our first live music series. Live entertainment is so badly needed here! And has been warmly welcomed. www.wherecommunityhappens.com
